The key to this question is the KCC strapline-“No Health Without Mental Health”. I have suffered with anxiety most of my life so it is great to come to a place where I am listened to and listen to others with mental health problems without judgment. Despite more publicity on mental health, there is still a taboo about talking openly on the subject. At KCC there is a friendly accepting atmosphere. I can go to the cafe for an informal chat or take part in one of the organised activities of which there are several. I sometimes go on the “Walk and Talk” trips to local green places which is a great opportunity to meet new people in lovely surroundings.
Now, I am retired,I now volunteer here in the quiet private room attached to the cafe and second hand shop and can empathise and listen to people with their problems of anxiety, depression, bereavement and other mental health problems. We also have a “heart circle” where people take turns to share and be listened to without interruption. I am a qualified therapist and herbalist so can help people in a practical way. KCC is an oasis of peace and hope in a frenzied and stressful world and is a great creator of community in the Bootle area.
